Boris Johnson has been criticised by his own medical chief for blaming high numbers of care home deaths on providers. England's Chief Medical Officer Prof Chris Whitty told MPs today he had "zero enthusiasm" for pointing the finger at care homes.
He admitted the UK was among countries which had not handled the care homes coronavirus crisis well. And he added that he would "shy away" from suggesting that official Government advice given to providers was ideal.
The Prime Minister sparked anger earlier this month for blaming deaths on care home chiefs not "following procedures". Almost 20,000 people have died from coronavirus in care homes since the start of the pandemic in March.
