It could take as long as five years to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control, a top WHO scientist has warned. The bombshell admission came as the number of worldwide Covid-19 deaths hit 300,000 – with over 32,000 deaths in the UK alone.
World Health Organisation Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said: "I would say in a four to five-year timeframe, we could be looking at controlling this." She told the Financial Times a vaccine “seems for now the best way out”, but said there were “lots of ifs and buts” about whether it would work.
Colleague Dr Mike Ryan added that nobody can predict when the pandemic will come to an end. He warned: “This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities.
