She frolicked, she curtsied, she believed in good in the world, on giant, 3-D screens. Many actors in this position would prove their brilliance by playing against type.
But in her career-making turn as Empress Catherine the Great in the “occasionally true story” of her reign, Fanning does something much more clever.
She plays the ultimate ingénue, better and funnier than anyone else could. “I am fucking charm itself!” she tells her advisors.
