German Shepherds are a breed that have a long and rich history of service- but they also make great family pets, in the right homes.
According to the Kennel Club, they are among the most loyal breeds of dog in the world. This, combined with their agility and fierce intelligence makes them excellent service dogs, and can be seen lending their expertise to professions from the police and mountain rescue to guide dogs.
However due to their large size and protective nature, owners can sometimes be ill-prepared for life with them and consequently many end up needing to be rehomed.
