High street lenders including Barclays, Nationwide and Halifax have issued warnings to customers after HSBC said it would not hesitate to cancel the accounts of those who break covid laws.
The retail bank, which owns First Direct and runs Marks & Spencer bank, said customers who enter branches without a mask will have their accounts withdrawn, unless they are medically exempt.
Speaking to The Mirror, a spokesman said those who refuse to comply will be refused service. Jackie Uhi, head of branch network, HSBC UK said: "Our colleagues deserve respect and should not have to face violent or abusive behaviour.
If individuals put themselves or our colleagues at risk, without a medical exemption, we reserve the right to withdraw their account" B
