But while sales of men’s shirts plummeted during the pandemic, according to Jermyn Street outfitter Hilditch & Key, the classic shirt now shows signs of recovery.“Traditional shirts are very much back,” says CEO Steve Miller. “And with summer events back in action, we’re seeing an appetite for double-cuffed shirts and cufflinks.” But casual is still very much king on the high street; John Lewis reports that sales of linen and button-down shirts are up 27 per cent on pre-pandemic sales.The scale of shirt styles and the etiquette around wearing them now differs wildly since Grandad Doig’s day.
Here’s how to get the shirt rules right. The humble button-down collared shirt is the Everyman item. The preppy younger brother to more patrician, upright types of shirt, it evolved as the shirt of choice for polo matches in the late 1800s; collars were fastened down with buttons to hold in place while pelting across the field.
