Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision saw a 22% jump in pro-forma revenue for the fourth quarter in 2022, boosted by its 2022 FIFA World Cup coverage and midterm political ad spending. The company also for the first time reported audience figures for its ViX streaming service, touting more than 25 million monthly active users on the free, ad-supported tier. (It didn’t release numbers for the ViX+ subscription tier.) According to TelevisaUnivision, that makes ViX the world’s largest Spanish-language streamer. TelevisaUnivision, which was formed through the January 2022 merger of Televisa and Univision Communications, reported a net loss of $1.6 billion for Q4. That included a $1.7 billion non-cash impairment charge, primarily on its goodwill, which it said was “driven by the impact of general market conditions, including comparable market valuations and the rising interest rate environment.” The company’s impairment loss in 2022 related to the write-down of goodwill, TV broadcast licenses, tradenames and program rights.

Drake and 21 Savage last week settled the lawsuit filed against them by Vogue over the marketing campaign for their collaborative album ‘Her Loss’.That campaign involved the creation and distribution of an assortment of fake media coverage, including a faked Vogue cover featuring Drake and 21 Savage, and even a short run of a mocked up edition of the fashion magazine containing that cover and some other spoof content.Whereas the other spoofed media didn’t seem too bothered by the ‘Her Loss’ promo, Vogue owner Condé Nast was not happy at all.It quickly sent out some cease and desist letters to the musicians and their communications agency Hiltzik Strategies, and when that didn’t result in any ceasing and desisting, the media firm went to court accusing Drake, 21 Savage and Hiltzik of trademark infringement, unfair competition and false advertising, among other things.That legal action sought a court order – initially a temporary restraining order – that would prohibit any further distribution of the fake Vogue cover, plus – of course – lots of lovely damages.Quickly granting the temporary restraining order, the judge concluded that “Condé Nast has a likelihood of success on its claims for federal and common law trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition, false endorsement, dilution, false advertising, and violation of [New York General Business Law]”.The musicians and their marketing team confirmed they’d adhere to that order at the time, telling the court: “To avoid unnecessary cost and expense, defendants, pending the outcome of this litigation, but without conceding any liability with respect to the claims asserted by Condé Nast in this action, and without conceding any wrongdoing on

A masterplan that will underpin the transformation of Middleton town centre has been officially adopted - but it could still see some big changes.The ambitious strategy which aims to make it a ‘beautiful and exciting place’ was voted through at a sometimes fiery township meeting at the Arena.Key proposals include the creation of a public square with cafe seating, improved walking and cycling links and the regeneration of brownfield sites such as historic Warwick Mill. Locarno’s First Look focus on indie U.K. film segues from the fest having developed a close rapport with the British industry over the decades, spanning from Mike Leigh’s 1972 Golden Leopard winner “Bleak Moments” to Terence Davies’s “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” which scooped the pard in 1998, and the more recent launches last year of Andrew Legge’s “LOLA” and Charlotte Colbert’s “She Will.” Locarno’s First Look initiative, in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI), will run August 4-6. Six selected U.K. films that are currently in post-production will be unveiled, providing their producers an opportunity to pitch them to international industry professionals attending the festival. The U.K. pics in post will be presented to sales agents, buyers, programmers and representatives from post-production funds.
