William Earl Special effects legend Richard Taylor has five Oscars under his belt, but he just wants to make big, gross puppets. Taylor is the founder of Wētā Workshop, which, among countless other titles, created the indelible effects for “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, MCU movies and “Mad Max: Fury Road.” He lights up when discussing “Sting,” a new low-budget giant spider movie. He says that despite the company’s comfort in handling large-scale effects work, there is room for the team to flex their creative muscles on smaller projects.
