Joe Otterson TV Reporter “Quantum Leap” has been canceled at NBC after two seasons, Variety has confirmed. The show served as a followup to the 1989 show of the same name starring Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell.

There’s so much to unpack in “Divinity,” the new gonzo, sci-fi-ish hallucinatory mindf*ck from filmmaker Eddie Alcazar, a director, writer, producer, and game developer who makes his feature-length debut with this bold, experimental new work. For one, Steven Soderbergh is an executive producer, and when the filmmaker co-signs as an exec on a young, new filmmaker, chances are the work is worth seeing.

Eddie Alcazar’s feature film debut “Divinity” is a lot of things scene-to-scene: a love story; an examination of how a father’s legacy can impact his son; a creature feature; a black and white sci-fi throwback; a stop motion masterpiece. Utilizing his low budget as a way to spark creativity, writer and director Eddie Alcazar successfully develops his dystopian vision of the future in which society is obsessed with the titular drug, which promises everlasting youth. Yet the director pauses when asked if he’d consider his dynamic midnight movie to be “weird.” “I never really think about that too much,” he says.

Like the first, 2018’s “Perfect,” this is a cryptic sci-fi body horror allegory where undeniably arresting aesthetics are nonetheless more a symptom of shallow lookism-based values than the intended critique.

Guests in attendance — who received zines and VHS boxes upon arrival — were also treated to writer-director Alcazar showing up to the event in a terrifying mask. Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and starring Stephen Dorff, the experimental film is set in an otherworldly human existence, where the creation of a groundbreaking immortality serum named “Divinity” is wreaking havoc.

There’s a certain type of dystopian sci-fi that turns up in Sundance every few years, a kind of ‘EPCOT on acid’ that causes a big ripple then rapidly fades away (see Escape From Tomorrow, a paranoid conspiracy thriller shot, guerrilla-style, in Disneyworld). Divinity, screening in the Next section, fits the bill exactly, a quirky mad scientist movie that, for all its attempts to be arty, darkly satirical and out-there, ends up as a kind of lo-fi companion piece to Don’t Worry Darling in its not-so-subtle skewering of American consumerism. Shot in grainy black and white, its chief draw is Stephen Dorff as you’ve never seen him before, and will likely never want to see him again.

As the Sundance Film Festival gets underway this weekend, the line-up boasts several films with plenty of intrigue for critics and audiences alike. But Eddie Alcazar‘s sci-fi thriller “Divinity” may rank higher than most in that regard, not just due to its delirious premise.

“Outlander” and “La Brea” — but NBC’s reboot of “Quantum Leap” doesn’t quite capture the spirit of its predecessor.That series aired for five seasons (1989-93) on NBC with stars Scott Bakula as time-jumping Dr. Sam Beckett and Dean Stockwell as Al, the cigar-chomping wiseguy hologram tasked with guiding Sam through his tricky missions after assuming someone else’s identity — and saving the day — as he bounced back and forth in time.This new version of “Quantum Leap” references the original show — both Bakula and Stockwell are seen, though not as in-the-flesh characters, and the series opener is dedicated to Stockwell, who died last November.

Scott Bakula starred in all five seasons of the original Quantum Leap series, but he has “no involvement” in the upcoming reboot that premieres on NBC next week.

Speculation about Bakula’s involvement in the 2022 revival have surrounded the show since the pilot episode was greenlit in January of this year, though there wasn’t any communication about Bakula’s role until the actor put out the new statement.
