John Malkovich starrer Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes and Alex Gibney’s untitled Boris Becker documentary are set to have their world premieres at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival next year. The projects are among the six titles which will play in the fest’s Berlinale Special Gala section, which also includes Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool, starring Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth and Cleopatra Coleman and Todd Field’s Tár.

With 2020’s “Possessor,” Brandon Cronenberg made a film to make his father, the body-horror master David Cronenberg, proud. The film quickly won over critics at the Sundance Film Festival for its trippy, grotesque take on sci-fi horror, with winning performances from Christopher Abbot and Andrea Riseborough.

Next month will see the return of the Sundance Film Festival; thankfully, we have a string of first looks of the 2023 lineup of films which includes Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor starring in the near future drama “The Pod Generation” that focuses on technology’s influence on pregnancies, Jonathan Majors-led bodybuilding pic “Magazine Dreams,” and director Brandon Cronenberg’s (“Possession”) new dystopian thriller “Infinity Pool,” which has Alexander Skarsgård (“The Northman”) and Mia Goth (“Pearl”) in lead roles.

Don’t Worry Darling topped the US box office over the weekend earning $19.2 million in its first big screen outing. The thriller, about a utopian 1950s desert community, directed by Olivia Wilde, overcame bad reviews and rumors about behind-the-scenes troubles to come out on top, according to Box Office Mojo. The debut is disappointing considering the film, starring Wilde, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh and Chris Pine, cost $35 million to make.The Woman King, starring Viola Davis, easily captured second place. Zack Sharf Martin Scorsese got a little too scared by Ti West’s “Pearl,” the A24-backed “X” prequel starring Mia Goth. In a review sent to A24 and published by /Film, Scorsese called “Pearl” a “deeply disturbing” horror movie that is “mesmerizing” and “wild.” West and Goth co-wrote the prequel, which world premiered at the Venice Film Festival. “Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema,” Scorsese said. “You feel it in every frame. A prequel to ‘X’ made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think ’50s Scope color melodramas), ‘Pearl’ makes for a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience… before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting.”

Jordan Moreau Sony’s “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, has earned $1.7 million at the domestic box office, as theatergoers slowly embrace one of the first major studio releases in a few weeks. The historical epic is aiming for a $15 million opening this weekend, where it doesn’t face much competition from rival releases. Other projections see a launch as high as $18 million to $20 million, or as low as $12 million. “The Woman King” comes with a $50 million price tag, so results on the lower end would be less than royal for Sony. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard,” “Love & Basketball”), the movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, where it had a warm reception from attendees. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Davis as a powerful general of the Agojie, an all-female military regiment that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. The cast includes John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu and Sheila Atim.
