He had already enlisted composer Brian Tyler to compose the film’s score, and as they were putting the finishing touches together, Tyler was simultaneously juggling other projects and on the cusp of releasing his new immersive audio-visual project “Are We Dreaming.” Cooley happened to be in the studio watching clips from “Are We Dreaming” and suggested taking the theme and turning it into a song. Tyler immediately got to work, pulling material from his audio-visual project.

“There’s something really special about Mario games,” says composer Brian Tyler. As a lifelong fan of the Mario series, Tyler was excited to bring the music from all of those worlds into a new animated universe for The Super Mario Bros. Over the years, he’s created themes and cues for Dom (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Cipher (Charlize Theron), and with “Fast X” he gets to dabble with Jason Momoa’s brilliant baddie, Dante. “Instead of creating a dark energy theme, I went for alluring,” Tyler says. In the film, Dante seeks to avenge his father’s death, Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) from 2011’s “Fast Five.” Dante lures the Fast Family to Rome, which leads to an action-packed chase through the cobbled streets of the Eternal City as Dom, Letty and their crew attempt to stop Dante from blowing up the Vatican. “Dante is charming and he makes you laugh. So, I used high strings such as the harp, and then we get into bass music with modern instruments,” says Tyler. “It gives you this feeling that you can’t look away. There’s a sense [in his music] of empathizing with him, and why he becomes this villain.”

Movie.” He rattles off the games, Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong… there are many more, and he’s played them all. “I knew this music,” Tyler shares. “It was a part of my childhood in the same way that I grew up listening to film scores.” Tyler has already worked across a wide swath of genres, from horror (“Scream 6”), romantic comedy (“Crazy Rich Asians”), Western (“Yellowstone”) and action (“Fast X”). But this was special assignment, Tyler tells Variety: “I had gaming magazines and I remember articles about Nintendo’s video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.”

Few composers in Hollywood are as busy as Brian Tyler is. Whether it’s film, television, or even video games, there’s always some form of media with Tyler’s music in it about to hit. Even right now, as the COVID-19 pandemic keeps the industry in limbo, he has several projects in the pipeline, including Taylor Sheridan’s potential 2020 Oscar player Those Who Wish Me Dead. Tyler’s first pairing with Sheridan, for the Paramount Network’s series Yellowstone, is actually what facilitated a recent chat between the two of us, which turned out to be about as easy-going and enjoyable as it gets.
