Beastie Boys have revealed that the gold record version of ‘Paul’s Boutique’ actually didn’t contain any music from the album at all.Members Ad-Rock and Mike D. shared the news as part of a new interview on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, recalling the time that they made the discovery about their gold record.They were given the award after their 1989 album was certified gold just two months after its original release date, having sold 500,000 copies.

Beastie Boys will sue the company that owns Chili’s Grill and Bar, claiming the restaurant chain unlawfully parodied their 1994 hit ‘Sabotage’.The hip hop trio have filed a lawsuit against Brinker International for using their song in a Chili’s advert, which allegedly spoofed ‘Sabotage’ and its iconic Spike Jonze-directed video.Filed on Wednesday (July 10) in New York on behalf of the three members Adam Horovitz ‘Ad Rock’, Mike ‘Mike D’ Diamond and the estate of Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch (who passed away in 2012), the band’s lawyers argued the chain used ‘Sabotage’ “without the permission of the rights owners.”Beastie Boys do not license any of their intellectual property for “third-party product advertising purposes”, which Yauch reportedly included in his will.They claimed one Chili’s video not only used ‘Sabotage’, but also showed “three characters wearing obvious 70s-style wigs, fake mustaches, and sunglasses who were intended to evoke the three members of Beastie Boys performed scenes depicting them ‘robbing’ ingredients from a Chili’s restaurant.”The band have alleged this was meant to parody the ‘Sabotage’ video and falsely given the impression that they endorse Chili’s.Beastie Boys are seeking around $150,000 (£115,932) in damages and demanding Brinker remove the offending videos.

Beastie Boys are suing the owner of Chili’s for using their song “Sabotage” in social media ads.The hip-hop and rock group filed a complaint in Manhattan federal court accusing Chili’s owner Brinker of copyright infringement and unfair competition from using significant portions of the 1994 track without a license.“Use of the ‘Sabotage’ sound recording, music composition and video was all without permission,” the group’s attorneys wrote in the lawsuit on Wednesday, obtained by the Post. “The plaintiffs do not license ‘Sabotage’ or any of their other intellectual property for third-party product advertising purposes, and deceased Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch included a provision in his will prohibiting such uses.”Yauch’s estate, Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz are all listed as plaintiffs in the suit.

Beastie Boys have announced a 30th anniversary reissue of their 1994 album ‘Ill Communication’.In a social media announcement yesterday (May 31), on the day the album turned 30, Beastie Boys issued a video clip showcasing the forthcoming boxset. It will comprise three vinyl LPs – two of the original album remastered, and a third record featuring remixes, bonus tracks and rarities – along with a lenticular cover.This boxset was originally issued in 2009 in a limited run of 1500 copies.

The New York City Council have approved an application to rename the corner of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan “Beastie Boys Square.” Efforts to pay homage to the long-running rap trio in that location — where the cover photo of their critically acclaimed 1989 album Paul’s Boutique was taken — since shortly after the death of one of their founding members, Adam “MCA” Yauch, in 2012. In 2014, Manhattan Community Board 3 turned down the proposal due to lack of community support for the petition created by Leroy McCarthy, who had successfully campaigned to designate a green space in Brooklyn Heights Adam Yauch Park and later got a Beastie Boys mural installed at the Ludlow and Rivington intersection — still there today, in its third iteration.
