Rob Lowe has said that he is currently working on the “early stages” of a sequel to his classic ‘80s coming of age film St. Elmo’s Fire.The original film was released in 1985 and is considered one of the key films in the Brat Pack movement.It served as the breakthrough for director Joel Schumacher, and starred Lowe alongside fellow Brat Pack stars Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Andrew McCarthy.And now, Lowe has told Entertainment Tonight that after the success of the recent documentary Brats, which told the story of that generation of actors and films, he is more committed than before to a second St. Elmo’s Fire instalment.“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe said, confirming that Brats had “only added to the excitement around it.”“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” he added.

The Exorcist directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty is considered, still, perhaps the greatest horror film of all time, certainly the most popular. The 1973 movie was even nominated for 10 Oscars and won two, unheard of in the genre at that time. It has been endlessly imitated for the past half century right up to now, recently and notably David Gordon Green’s critically reviled 2023 reboot The Exorcist: Believer, which even brought original Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn back into the fold after all these decades. But the OG is impossible to touch, so what was going through Joshua John Miller’s mind when he decided to take on a new film so closely linked to it?

St. Elmo’s Fire was a script Kurlander wrote with director Joel Schumacher, inspired by events in his life. Now an academic, Kurlander has written several guest columns for Deadline including a 35th anniversary remembrance of St. Elmo’s Fire. Why is he tapping again into those memories? He just watched Brats, the Hulu documentary that premiered at Tribeca, directed by and starring Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the St. Elmo’s Fire ensemble that felt maligned by a mag article published the week before the film was released and became a surprise hit. Here, Kurlander supplies some great dish — did you know Demi Moore‘s drug demons almost forced Joel Schumacher to replace her with the young singer Madonna? Or that Georgetown shunned the movie for immoral activity but OK’d The Exorcist because despite the vile goings on involving a possessed child, evil didn’t win? A little of that stuff would have helped McCarthy’s docu, which gets tedious as he attempts to expunge demons, even as cohorts like Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy seem to be humoring him on camera. After all, that film launched fine futures for them, even if the moniker stung. McCarthy paints journo Blum as a villain, but in fairness, The Brat Pack was a far more clever coinage than putting “gate” on the end of every scandal since Watergate. Blum also unwittingly etched into permanent Hollywood history the memory of those actors when they were young and gorgeous. Who wants to be forgotten?
