Mohamed Salah is the “perfect player” for Liverpool and would not be as effective if he leaves to join Barcelona or Real Madrid, according to former Reds defender Markus Babbel.The Egyptian star has stalled over renewing his contract at Anfield, although reports on Saturday suggested he is closing in a deal that would double his weekly salary to £400,000-a-week.

That would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, but the Merseyside outfit have been reluctant to meet his demands due to a salary structure that they have in place.The 29-year-old has been nothing short of sensational since arriving from Roma in a £38m deal in 2017, notching a record 32 goals in his first season.

And he has maintained that level of form for the Premier League title contenders this season, scoring 28 goals and laying on 11 assists for his team-mates in all competitions.Salah only has 14 months left on his current contract and will be able to speak to foreign clubs to discuss a pre-contract agreement on January 1, 2023, with preliminary talks understood to have already begun.

It leaves Liverpool with a dilemma over whether to give their prized asset a bumper new deal or cash in this summer while they still can.If he was available to sign on a free transfer, it is likely Salah would draw interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Paris Saint-Germain given their past interest in the forward.
