hell" has opened up in a lake in the US.The 75ft-wide swirling vortex appeared once again at Lake Berryessa, the largest lake in Napa County, California, where residents have reported the strange phenomenon. When water levels rise in the lake, the excess water is usually sucked into the large hole which residents now call the "glory hole" or the "portal from hell".The baffling effect of rising water levels creates a seemingly bottomless pit where the water is sucked down into it, with the strange occurrence reported every now and then by confused residents. The hole is occasionally spotted on the surface of the lake, which happens when water rises above 15ft and creates a drain-like effect. But the "glory hole" has opened up several times before, with sporadic appearances of the bizarre effect being spotted in 2019, 2017 and 2006.The strange event attracted various onlookers who were surely puzzled by the effect, which LADBible likened to water swirling around the drain of a bathtub when a plug is pulled.Sharing pictures of the strange phenomenon on Twitter, one woman wrote of the "ominous" hole that resides in the water. She wrote: "Here's the glory hole at Lake Berryessa.

It's about 20 miles from my house. Fun boarding and trout fishing. Even though blocked from boats, still ominous."The vortex is due to a high spillway, which was built as an alternative to the more commonly used chute by engineers in the 1950s to control the flow of water.
