A year later he organised a protest outside the Old Abbey Taphouse pub on the Greenheys estate between Hulme and Moss Side after he was refused service because he was black.
In his later years Johnson drove buses and lorries in Manchester. He died on September 28 1974 at Oldham General Hospital. Such a legacy has prompted almost 800 people to sign a petition calling for Manchester council to build a permanent monument honouring Johnson to be built in Manchester.
