Kinder Surprise eggs recalled over 'salmonella outbreak' just before Easter celebrations

Kinder Surprise has had thousands of sweet treats recalled after a potential "salmonella outbreak" just weeks before Easter.

The Food Standards Agency launched a Kinder Surprise egg recall and are advising consumers not to eat certain products.Food chiefs say the recall comes after an "outbreak of salmonella" and that multinational confectionary company Ferrero says it is "taking the precautionary action of recalling selected batches of Kinder Surprise."Products to be recalled are those manufactured in Belgium, with the singular 20g Kinder Egg and the packets of Kinder Surprise of three 20g bars impacted by the salmonella outbreak.All products with a best before date between July 11, 2022 and October 7, 2022 have been recalled after the potential outbreak.

The food alert states there is "possible presence of salmonella" and that symptoms usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps with the notice adding that "a number of these cases have been young children".Ferrero has ordered point of sale notices to be displayed in stores stocking the product, with notices explaining to customers why the product is being recalled and to tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

The Food Standards Agency added: "Investigations, led by UKHSA, Public Health Scotland, Public Health Wales and Public Health Agency Northern Ireland, have found a link between reported cases of salmonella poisoning across the UK and a specific product produced by the Ferrero company."In response to this, Ferrero has taken the precautionary step to undertake a product withdrawal and recall with immediate effect whilst investigations continue."The product thought to be affected have all been manufactured at the same factory.
