Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema has dropped an appeal against a one-year suspended sentence for complicity in a bid to blackmail former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape, according to his lawyer.French football was rocked back in 2015 when Benzema was arrested for attempted extortion, and subsequently suspended from the national team.

The striker was found guilty in November last year following a lengthy investigation and slapped with a £64,000 fine, as well as a suspended one-year prison sentence. The ruling was immediately appealed, though Benzema's lawyer Hugues Vigier has now confirmed that it's been withdrawn, insisting that his 34-year-old client is "exhausted" by the process and just wants to put the whole sorry saga behind him."This withdrawal endorses a ruling of condemnation and apparently of guilt.

It is a judicial truth. But it is not reality," Vigier told L'Equipe.Benzema was one of five individuals tried over the blackmail plot, which involved the stealing of a sex tape from Valbuena's mobile phone.
