The government has “no idea” how many people are here illegally and “doesn’t seem interested in finding out” a senior MP has warned.
It comes after an investigation revealed that no estimate of the number of people in the country in breach of the law has been made in the last 15 years.
The Home Office, who are responsible for tracking immigration, has not had an up-to-date estimate of the size of the illegal population in the UK since 2005, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).
That report suggested there were about 430,000 people in the country with no right to remain here, but independent research since then has put the figure at more than one million, the NAO said.
