FIFA has ditched its plans to hold the World Cup every two years - and is now targeting a tournament every three years instead.
The organisation's president Gianni Infantino rowed back on plans for a biennial World Cup at last week's congress of the 211-member associations in Doha, claiming it was never FIFA's idea in the first place.
The plans for a two-yearly cycle split football down the middle, with UEFA and CONMEBOL threatening to boycott the competition if they got the green light.
But with those plans now shelved, Infantino is reportedly offering up a new blueprint for what the football calendar could look like in the future.According to The Sun, the Swiss supremo wants a World Cup every three years as part of a new 36-month tournament cycle.
