Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorPearl Jam paid tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins on the opening night of their “Gigaton” tour in singer Eddie Vedder’s hometown of San Diego on Tuesday night.Before performing “Quick Escape” at the city’s Viejas Arena Vedder paid homage to drummer Matt Cameron’s friendship with Hawkins, who died in Columbia while the Foos were on tour, and added a personal touch as well.“[Hawkins] emitted something very incredible and very special,” Vedder said to the audience, before turning to Cameron and saying, “We’re all missing him, and so, Matt, I’m sorry again for your loss. But it just gives us another chance to say how much we appreciate you as well.” Cameron and Hawkins formed a side ban called the Nighttime Boogie Association in 2020 after both took part in a tribute concert for the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in 2019.On Sunday night, the  Red Hot Chili Peppers honored Hawkins as well, at Jazz Fest in New Orleans on Sunday while frontman Dave Grohl, Hawkins’ widow Alison, and other members of the Foo Fighters looked on from the wings.

Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame – for the second time – this past weekend, where he was honoured with a tribute performance by Billy Idol, Jelly Roll and more.The Prince of Darkness was previously inducted as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006, and on Saturday (October 19) was inducted as a solo artist – a long time coming as he’s been eligible for the honour since 2006.During the ceremony at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to the singer’s solo career was performed by Billy Idol, Tool‘s Maynard James Keenan, and country artist Jelly Roll, alongside a backing band comprised of bassist Rob Trujillo – who was in Osbourne’s band prior to joining Metallica – Zakk Wylde, Wolfgang Van Halen, Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Chad Smith, guitarist Steve Stevens and producer Andrew Watt.For the performance, Maynard James Keenan kicked things off with ‘Crazy Train’, which was introduced by Ozzy himself, who sang the song’s iconic ‘All aboard!’ lyrics.After that, Jelly Roll covered Osbourne’s power ballad ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home,’ and Billy Idol closed out the performance with ‘No More Tears’.Watch fan-shot footage of the entire tribute performance below.During Osbourne’s induction speech, he gave his fans and supports a quick round of thank-yous so as not to “bore you with a long, drawn-out fucking monologue”. Shirley Halperin Executive Editor, MusicNandi Bushell, the teen drummer (she turned 12 in April) who became an internet phenomenon during the pandemic, will join the Foo Fighters in honoring the late Taylor Hawkins at a Wembley Stadium tribute concert in late September.Hawkins died in March in Colombia at the age of 50.The Foo Fighters — comprised of Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffe — announced performers for the London concert earlier this week. They will include a mix of Hawkins’ friends and influences: Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Mark Ronson, the Police’s Stewart Copeland, Wolfgang Van Halen, Jane’s Addiction’s Chris Chaney, veteran jazz/rock drummer Omar Hakim, Queen touring member Rufus Taylor and Hawkins’ cover band Chevy Metal will play at both shows.

Grohl’s presence in town sparked unfounded rumors that he might perform.
