A mother of a daughter with Down’s syndrome has criticised Emmerdale over their baby termination storyline. Melissa Lockwood, 42, thinks the ITV soap should rethink the upcoming plot that is set to see characters Laurel and Jai terminate their baby after being told by doctors that the unborn child has Down’s syndrome.

The mother-of-three addressed her concerns in an open letter to the Yorkshire based show in which she penned that society discriminates against people with Down’s syndrome due to outdated and negative information.

Rotherham native Melissa also claims that Emmerdale did not consult any Down's syndrome charities when developing the storyline, instead speaking only to ARC antenatal who only offer support to those choosing
