autopsy report which describes how the convict convulsed for 15 minutes before dying of his lethal injection. Grant had sentenced to death in 1998 for the killing of Gay Carter, a member of staff at the prison where he was serving time for robbery, whom he stabbed 16 times. At his execution in October 2021, Grant reportedly swore repeatedly and cried 'Let's go' before he was injected.
The new report shows that Grant's lungs after his execution weighed 1,390 grams, considerably more than the average weight of 1,000g.
Known as 'heavy lungs', it's thought this finding correlates with earlier reports that said Grant convulsed and vomited for 15 minutes after the injection before dying.
The lungs also contained levels of edema, congestion, and mild emphysematous change.According to pathologist Dr. Mark Edgar the presence of edema would indicate that the condemned man would "be aware of sensations of drowning, asphyxia, and terror."Grant, who also vomited on himself during his execution, requested a huge banquet to feast on for his last meal.
