Arsenal flop David Luiz has been savaged online after missing a sitter in the dying moments of Flamengo's derby defeat to Botafogo.Luiz had an unsuccessful two-year stint with the Gunners after quitting Chelsea back in 2019, with the erratic defender perhaps best remembered for a string of high-profile clangers.
The 35-year-old returned to his native Brazil last year to see out his career. He penned a 15-month deal with Flamengo, who locked horns with their bitter rivals, Botafogo, on Sunday.
But Flamengo's sorry start to the season continued as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat - and Luiz has been ridiculed online after spurning a golden last-gasp chance to pinch a point for the Brazilian outfit.Luiz had ghosted into the penalty area and was teed up with a perfect pull-back - but Luiz ballooned his strike wildly over the bar.
Unfortunately for the ex-PSG star, fans have rushed to stick the boot in after his late mishap. One fan tweeted: "Nice clearance for a defender," while another left a slightly kinder post for the defender, quipping: "Never change David," complete with a laughing emoji.Despite his horrendous late miss, Luiz fronted up after the match by speaking to the media, insisting that Flamengo deserved something from the match.
