The head of the World Health Organisation has warned coronavirus patients will die unless medics are prioritised. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said patients will lose their lives because the health worker who could have saved them is sick.

He said that there were "alarming" reports of health workers getting sick. Tedros also said he would be contacting the G20 heads of state to solve the global shortage of protective gear for health workers.

He called on governments to be more proactive in tackling the virus, warning that it is accelerating as the number of worldwide infections tops 300,000.

Tedros also said social distancing and staying at home are "defensive" measures, but in order to beat the disease authorities need to "attack" it.
