archaeologists investigating a decades old nuclear missile crisis bunker. The message, which was etched into the insides of a Cuban Missile Crisis bunker and likely left by a Cuban soldier, was found in the system of bunkers and trenches on the island's coast. The defiant message was a stellar find for archaeologists, who discovered the graffiti while documenting the remains of other bunkers and trenches in the area.Bunkers and trenches had been built during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, a 13-day standoff that inspired a resistance message from one soldier.Inside of the bunker, one soldier, likely Cuban, had etched into the walls that surrender was not on the cards, new research has found.

The individual's message was written in Spanish and indicates that they were determined to fight in the event of war breaking out, which could have triggered a nuclear World War Three.

Odlanyer Hernández de Lara, a doctoral candidate in archaeology, said: "Some inscriptions relating to the time of the Missile Crisis are very interesting, including one that reads: 'aquí no se rinde nadie' (no one is giving up here)."Speaking of the bunkers themselves, de Lara noted: "These bunkers are concrete structures with a main and an elevated/secondary embrasure [opening] facing the sea, and a main rear entrance with two alternative exits to the sides."The trenches are excavated into bedrock, connecting the bunkers with [a] storage area." The trenches and bunkers were built for use in the potential escalation of the Cuban Missile Crisis but have since been abandoned and left to rot after, Live Science reported.

Research from de Lara is yet to be published, but archeologists are exploring the Cuban bunkers to document Cold War defences with 3D.
