It’s 50 years since a vet named James Alfred Wight published a book based on his life working for an eccentric boss at a practice in 1930s Yorkshire.
He wrote under the name James Herriot, and his books became a hit worldwide, selling 60million copies. Many more fans got to know James, his boss Siegfried and Siegfried’s wayward younger brother Tristan when All Creatures Great And Small arrived on TV in 1978.
The late Robert Hardy played Siegfried, while Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison became stars as James and Tristan. Now Channel 5 has revived the series.
