Omicron is an "emergency situation" for the NHS and a lot of friends and relatives will get ill, a senior World Health Organisation (WHO) official has warned.
Dr David Nabarro, Covid Special Envoy at WHO, said that the record-breaking numbers recorded yesterday are "just the beginning of an extraordinary acceleration".
On Wednesday, 78,610 new cases were recorded in the UK - the highest number of daily cases since the pandemic began. Speaking on Sky News, Dr Nabarro expressed concerns that people are dismissing Omicron as mild despite the variant's ability to spread 'super fast' through the population.He explained: "Even if Omicron does cause less severe disease, the sheer number of cases will once again overwhelm health systems."Nicola
