Vladimir Putin has warned of "consequences greater than any of you have faced in history” if governments rise to Ukraine's defence. As empty as the world hopes Russia's threats are, it has led to the terrifying hypothetical question of what would happen if nuclear bombs blew around the world at once. With no pre-existing data around to explaining the extent of devastation that would unfold from numerous blasts, YouTube channel Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell, delved into the science.A chilling yet colourful animated video which has been viewed 25 million times since it was uploaded three years ago, breaks down the staggering impact of nuclear warfare.Based on the world's 15,000 nuclear weapons that had been built by March 2019, just three of them would be enough to wipe out an entire city.As such it would take 13,500 nuclear warheads to destroy all of Earth's 4,500 cities.

The video compares the power of 15,000 warheads to three billion tons of TNT which is 15 times more devastating than the world's most powerful volcano eruption of Krakatoa. If all the warheads exploded on the same spot it would create an unprecedented 31 mile wide fireball and a blast wave that would destroy everything in its path for 1,865 miles.

Beyond that radius of destruction, the pressure wave would be felt around the world for weeks on end following an explosion so loud that it would also be heard across the globe.

The mushroom cloud caused by the blast would go so high that it would scape the very edges of the Earth's atmosphere and almost breakthrough into space. If the Amazon Rainforest was chosen for some twisted reason as the the location of the explosion, the entire South American continent would become engulfed in flames.
