What it's like to drive the new £310,000 McLaren 765LT Spider

2020 765LT Coupe, which sold out long ago and was also restricted to 765 examples worldwide.The new Spider weighs 49kg more thanks to the roof mechanics but I doubt many drivers would even notice the difference.

McLaren engineers have made subtle tweaks across the board, from revised damper settings that lower the height to a new, active rear wing.The steering ratios have been enhanced, while a four-pipe titanium exhaust adds even more drama.

Not that you need it. Plant the accelerator and the 4.0-litre V8 races to 62mph in just 2.7 seconds – it will crash through 124mph in 7.2 seconds and, hold onto your hat, won’t stop until 205mph.My neighbour owns an Aston Martin convertible and when I took him through the gears he tore the skin of his knuckles, frantically reaching to steady himself using a door handle.

He needn’t have worried because the Spider is fitted with powerful carbon ceramic brakes that offer quite staggering stopping ability, too.Despite the track-focussed, rock-hard seats in my test car (a £6,250 option), for ‘everyday’ use, the 765LT – or longtail – does offer a few useful features.
