Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United legend - but things could have been very different had his dad heeded his words as a teenager.Because at the age of just 14, Rooney asked his dad to tell legendary Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson to "f*** off" over the phone.

The extraordinary request came to light at an exclusive black-tie dinner event in Manchester on Saturday night.Rooney recalled several stories from his playing days, including the incredible exchange between him and his dad over Ferguson.

He said: "Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign me when I was 14. He was on the phone to my mum and dad. "They said, ‘Alex is on the phone, Manchester United want to sign you’.

I said, ‘Tell him to f**** off. I want to play for Everton.'" That could have been the end of Rooney's United career before it had even started - had his dad listened to the youngster. But as he got older, Rooney realised he did in fact want to play for Ferguson, who even back then was widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time.
