Manchester United were cruising in their Champions League group stage clash against Feyenoord on their way to qualification. The Red Devils were 3-0 up in Holland and playing some neat stuff, just knocking the ball around with the three points in the bag.

Andy Cole had netted a hat-trick to silence the raucous Dutch fans at De Kuip earlier to all but end the contest. But that was when Paul Bosvelt decided to stamp his authority on the match - literally - when he came flying in and almost broke Denis Irwin’s leg.

The Irishman had just controlled the ball before the former Netherlands international crunched his studs into the defender’s knee.It was a truly shocking challenge - even for those days - but somehow the referee Sandor Puhl failed to even show the future Manchester City star a yellow card, let alone a red one.

There was no thought for the ball when Bosvelt absolutely scythed Irwin down, leaving him writhing in agony. It was no surprise to see Sir Alex Ferguson ripping his hair out at the sidelines - even taking his anger out on the opposition’s coaching staff. “A f***ing disgrace,” the Scotsman was seen bellowing at his opposite number after a number of dirty challenges - including Gary Neville being by a particularly disgraceful elbow. After the match, Fergie chased Bosvelt down the tunnel shouting: “You scumbag, you ratbag, you dirty b******”.
