And after his final home game in charge - a 2-1 victory over Swansea City - the legendary Scotsman took to the microphone to issue a final request to the club's fans and board."I would like to remind you this club stood by me in bad times, the players and the staff," he told supporters inside Old Trafford. "Your job now is to stand by the new manager."That request lasted all of 10 months as United hired and then fired David Moyes following a dismal 2013-14 campaign.
Moyes, 58, was specifically chosen by Ferguson to succeed him when he retired. But the appointment didn't go to plan as the Scotsman struggled to adapt to the biggest job in the land.
United have since continued to stumble from manager to manager with limited success. Louis van Gaal provided a singular FA Cup win but was decried for his style of play.
