Three things Klopp got right as Liverpool beat Southampton to take title race to the wire

Liverpool ensured the Premier League title race went to the final day of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Southampton on Tuesday night.Jurgen Klopp’s side travelled to the south coast knowing they had to win to remain in with a chance of pipping Manchester City to the title and they left with the three points they needed. They had to do it the hard way, with Southampton taking an early lead through Nathan Redmond’s deflected effort on the counter-attack after VAR decided not to look at a possible foul by Lyanco in the build-up.Liverpool hit back from Takumi Minamino’s powerful effort at the near post and, after some sustained pressure, took the lead midway through the second half when Joel Matip’s looping header found its way in from a corner.

Horrified Liverpool fans hate Jurgen Klopp's 'FA Cup third round' line-up vs Benfica
Liverpool fans have got the jitters after seeing Jurgen Klopp's line-up for tonight's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Benfica. The Reds are strong favourites to win the tie having secured a 3-1 victory in Lisbon last week, but after fielding a team that wouldn't look out of place in an FA Cup third-round fixture, Liverpool fans are genuinely concerned that it might end up being a long old night for them.First-team shoe-ins Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all been dropped, while the likes of Joe Gomez and Konstantinos Tsimikas have been handed unexpected run-outs in defence.Elsewhere, James Milner has replaced Thiago in midfield, Ibrahima Konate comes in for Van Dijk, and Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino lead the line (check out the full line-up below)."That's a lot of changes for only having a 2 goal advantage," one nervous fan tweeted."Feels like we're underestimating them," said a second, while another wrote: "I get the need to rotate and keep our strongest fit, but I really don't know about that midfield."Is Jurgen Klopp's line-up too weak? Let us know what you think in the comments section.A fourth fan wrote: Is this am FA Cup third-round game? … Guys see what happened to Real yesterday? … 2 goal lead is nothing they can comeback."Klopp will almost certainly be keen to keep his stars as fresh as possible, especially with Liverpool still fighting on all three available fronts, and an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City coming in just a few days. And with just a point separating them and City at the top of the Premier League, the title run-in is shaping up to be one of the most nail-biting in history.Let's see if Klopp's risk pays off, shall we?

James Milner names four Liverpool stars in all-time teammates XI but leaves out Mo Salah
Liverpool stars in his best ever team-mates XI and even had room to squeeze in Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer. The three-time Premier League winner, 36, has enjoyed a decorated career playing for some of the biggest clubs in England. And despite the world-class talent in Milner's XI, there are still some high-profile omissions - neither Mohamed Salah nor Sadio Mane appear in his star-studded side. But Liverpool selections did feature heavily in the Englishman's 11 with current team-mates Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk all making the cut.Partnering the Dutch defender at centre-back is Jonathan Woodgate, a Leeds United team-mate of Milner's who he describes as a "superstar.""Woody was exceptional at Leeds and so unlucky with injuries, but before that we all thought he was a superstar," Milner told Four Four Two."Put it this way: I’m leaving both Rio Ferdinand and Vincent Kompany out of my side, which shows just how much I thought of him.” Popping up at left-back is Chelsea and England ace Ashley Cole who Milner described as the "fittest footballer around" - high praise indeed from a 36-year-old Premier League regular.Sitting on the fence in the age-old Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard debate, the Liverpool midfielder has named both in his best XI.Though he did note the current Aston Villa boss as "the best all-round footballer I’ve ever played with."HAVE YOUR SAY! Simon Jordan's comparison of Klopp and Guardiola leaves fans saying it's "stupid"
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola a chequebook manager after comparing his situation to Jurgen Klopp’s at Liverpool. The two Premier League titans are tussling for the title this year, though City are the wide favourites with a nine-point gap over the Reds.If they do on to win the league, it will be the fourth title in five years at the Etihad - demonstrating clear domination over the competition. The only exception over the past half-decade was when Liverpool won the league in 2020 after accumulating 99 points in a remarkable year for the Anfield outfit. However, one criticism levelled at Guardiola has been the sheer amount of cash that has been spent by him since arriving at the club. The Catalan coach has splashed out on nearly £1billion on players since making the move to Manchester. At Liverpool, though, Klopp has spent just over £650m, including mammoth fees for Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Naby Keita. But talkSPORT host Jordan has taken aim at Guardiola - insisting Klopp would be dominating the Premier League if he had the kind of cash at disposal at the Etihad. He said: “You take the time that they have been together and the fact of the matter is that every single Premier League point won by Pep Guardiola has cost Man City £667,000.“Every point won by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp has cost £243,000.Want to be on the ball with all of the latest football news?Well then sign up for the brilliant Daily Star football email newsletter! From the latest transfer news to the agenda-setting stories, get it all in your email inbox - don't miss a thing. It only takes a matter of seconds.Simply type your email address into the box at the top of this article and hit 'subscribe'.And that's it, job done.
