There is a lot going on in Stockport 's Old Town as the regeneration continues, but there is also a busy network of hidden structures underground that many may not realise exist.
Beneath the cobbled and winding streets lie forgotten doorways and secret cellars that tell tales of the town's rich past. It's 'like a rabbit warren', says one expert, who describes Stockport as riddled with holes and connecting tunnels.
Phil Catling, Stockport born and bred, has a wealth of knowledge about what lurks underneath the many new independents and old pubs in Underbanks and around the Market Hall.
He says there are cellars upon cellars, dungeons, and old nightclubs, including where Jimi Hendrix once famously played in the 1960s.
