Multi-million pound proposals to transform Ashton-under-Lyne’s market square which include a huge new ‘feature canopy’ have been formally lodged.

Brent Lang Executive Editor James Ashcroft will direct the feature film adaptation of “Old Haunts.” The “Coming Home In the Dark” filmmaker was tapped for the gig by AWA Studios, the film and television division of Artists, Writers & Artisans (AWA), which published the popular graphic novel that is inspiring the movie. Ashcroft will direct the “Old Haunts” adaptation from a script by in-demand scribe Aaron Rabin, who is hot off of the newly launched Marvel series, “Secret Invasion.” Zach Studin, president of AWA Studios, will produce the movie. Since the world premiere of “Coming Home In The Dark” at Sundance, where the psychological thriller made a stir, Ashcroft has become an in-demand filmmaker, lining up projects with AGBO, Legendary, and Netflix.

Charna Flam Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the rights to Jim Capobianco’s directorial debut “The Inventor” and will release the film in theaters nationwide on Aug. 25. The stop-motion film includes the voices of Daisy Ridley, Marion Cotillard, Stephen Fry, Gauthier Battoue and Matt Berry. “Ratatouille” screenwriter, Capobianco wrote, produced and directed “The Inventor,” alongside co-director Pierre-Luc Granjon. “The Inventor” follows famed inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci after he leaves Italy for France. In his new country, da Vinci joins the French court where he experiments with flying contraptions, invents machines and studies the human body, all in an effort to answer the question: “What is the meaning of life?”

K.J. Yossman “The Kissing Booth” producer Andrew Cole-Bulgin has boarded Holocaust feature “Land Mine,” which he is developing with writer and director Darren Statman. The project, which will also include an accompanying novel, has already been made into a short film of the same name under Cole-Bulgin’s banner Tickled Pink, a new gen-IP development company. “Land Mine” is set in Poland in the late summer of 1945. Based on historical records and witness testimonies, it tells the story of a young Jewish man, Samuel, who emerges from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as his family’s sole survivor. Returning to his family’s Polish farm, 22-year-old Samuel finds it has been occupied by a local laborer called Piotr who is using it to run a moonshine business.

IMAX is partnering with Beach House Pictures and China Review Studio on feature documentary The Elephant Odyssey. The film will chronicle the epic adventure of the wandering Asian elephants that captivated viewers around the world in 2020 and explore the rarely seen world of Yunnan, China where the elephants live. Filmed with IMAX cameras and slated for release across the IMAX network in 2024, the 90-minute film is currently in production in China. Alice Gu (The Donut King) is directing with Clair Popkin (Free Solo) serving as DP.

Yossman “Sherlock” star Amanda Abbington has been tapped to appear in Ludovica Musumeci debut feature, “To The Girl I Once Knew.” The film, which Musumeci writes and directs, has also cast Amelia Eve (“The Haunting of Bly Manor”) and Stella Lelouch (“The Reunion”). They will join Frances de La Tour (“Harry Potter”), Calvin Demba (“The Rig”), Rhea Norwood (“Heartstopper”) and newcomer Oriane Pick. Amy Blair is casting director. Production is set to start this summer.

Eric Roberts (“Babylon,” “Suits”) has joined Spyder Dobrofsky’s upcoming feature, “Down Below.” The psychological horror film, “centers around a young sheriff and a criminal suspect who find their lives intertwined when both become haunted by a sinister force on Christmas Eve,” per the official logline. Roberts portrays a police psychologist, who’s having difficulty with his patient, a suspended cop due to an act of violence against a civilian. Roberts is joined by Hutch Dano and Christopher Livingston.
