Aqua respond to their iconic Barbie Girl song not being used in Margot Robbie movie
Margot Robbie may be playing a Barbie girl in a Barbie world, but she won’t be doing so to the tune of Aqua’s iconic song. One of the cheesiest and ridiculously catchy songs ever penned, Aqua’s Barbie Girl was released in 1997 and is still a staple at themed nineties club nightsThe brilliantly camp track was a huge hit in the UK, sitting comfortably atop the charts for no less than four weeks.(Though it wasn’t as popular with Barbie owners Mattel, who unsuccessfully sued the band after its release, accusing Aqua of having made their childhood toy a ‘sex object.’)It appears director Greta Gerwig may not be a fan of the track either, as her star-studded live-action film based around the character does not include Aqua’s hit song.Earlier this year, the band’s manager confirmed Barbie Girl will not be used in the film (boooo), and the band’s members have now finally spoken about the decision.Speaking to Variety, Soren Rasted joked they should tell people they turned the movie down as ‘Ryan Gosling is not good enough.’Singer Lene Nystrom, meanwhile, suggested that using the Barbie Girl long in the Barbie movie might make things just too cheesy – in her words, ‘cheese on cheese.’There’s clearly no hard feeling about the decision not to use the Barbie Girl track however, as Lene says she ‘totally understands why they didn’t use the track.‘But it’s going to bring us a lot of attention no matter what,’ she added.Greta’s massively-anticipated film, which stars Margot and Ryan in the leading roles as Barbie and Ken, has finished filming and is set to be released next year.It features incredible costumes, all-pink mansions and cars, and bleach-blond Ryan decked out in double denim.Peter Andre defends age gap between James Argent, 34,
