Discovery executives have unveiled the first look at “The Penguin,” the spin-off series focusing on Colin Farrell’s titular Gotham City gangster from the 2022 blockbuster film “The Batman.” The preview was part of the company’s presentation on Wednesday of its streaming service, Max, a combination of the HBO Max and Discovery+ services. “The Penguin,” which is currently in production, will run for eight episodes. Spoiler alert for that film: After Paul Dano’s the Riddler kills Carmine Falcone, one of Gotham City’s top mob bosses, he floods the major downtown area in a coordinated terrorist attack — leaving Farrell’s Cobblepot with a city in chaos and a power vacuum within Gotham’s underworld.

William Earl The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has recruited another 128 journalists to join the voting body that selects the nominees and winners of the annual Golden Globe Awards. The new recruits bring the number of people set to vote for the 2024 Globe kudos to 310, representing journalists from 76 countries around the world. The HFPA had publicly committed to significantly expanding the voting base for the Globes after facing scandal and upheaval for the lack of diversity among its membership base and for its internal practices. Last year, the HFPA recruited 103 new international journalists to vote on the 2023 Globe Awards that were handed out this past January. Of that group, 87 are returning as voters for 2024, along with the 128 new recruits. That total of 215 voters will join with 95 full-fledged members of the HFPA to bring the Globes voting body up to 310.

Thania Garcia The Recording Academy has extended its eligibility date to Sept. 15 — two weeks later than the Aug. 31 date the organization proposed just a month ago. On Thursday, Harvey Mason Jr., the Academy’s CEO, issued a statement addressing the change in a message to members. “A few weeks ago, we communicated a change to the eligibility period for the 66th Grammy Awards,” his note stated, referring to the March announcement that the 66th annual awards ceremony had adjusted their eligibility period to start on Oct. 1, 2022, to Aug. 31, 2023, one month shorter than that of the previous year. He continued, “After listening to concerns from some members of the music community, we have decided to amend the end date of the previously-announced eligibility period. The eligibility deadline for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards will be extended by two weeks, to Friday, September 15, 2023.”

It turns out Rissenbeek will have reached retirement age (67) by March 2024, when her contract as executive director of the Berlinale expires. That leaves her with one more edition to prepare with her teammate Carlo Chatrian, the festival’s artistic director. The pair has formed a dynamic duo since being jointly appointed in 2018, succeeding Dieter Kosslick. In an interview with Variety, Rissenbeek said that after next year’s festival, she’s decided she will dedicate herself to other things she enjoys, such as social and humanitarian work. She also spoke about her personal highlights during the 2023 edition and what’s next for the Berlinale.
