Squid have shared their latest single ‘Building 650’ and announced a string of UK headline shows for 2025.The art-rock band are preparing to release their third studio album ‘Cowards’ via Warp Records on February 7 (pre-order here) and have already shared the lead single ‘Crispy Skin’.Now, they have released a second single, the bright and colourful ‘Building 650’, which frontman Ollie Judge has said was inspired “by our first ever trip to Japan”. Check it out below.Marking their third studio album, ‘Cowards’ is set for release on February 7, and explores nine stories where protagonists reckon with cults, charisma and apathy – with the band exploring the divide between right and wrong.It is also set to see Squid push the boundaries of their sound, with the English art rock quintet exploring inspirations of folk, kosmische, psychedelia, jazz and electronics.To celebrate the announcement, the band have shared the first preview of the record in the form of lead single ‘Crispy Skin’.

Squid have cancelled their upcoming tour dates following a member of the band being involved in an accident, the band have shared in a social media statement.Earlier today (September 3) the Brighton post-punks took to Instagram to make the announcement about upcoming shows in China and Malaysia. The band had been set to play a series of shows in the two Asian nations beginning with a set at Sonic Jam Festival in Xi’an, China, on September 8.Describing themselves as “extremely sad” to make the announcement, Squid explained that “one of us was involved in an accident and has multiple facial fractures.” They said they were told it would be unsafe for the unnamed band member to fly, and that while they had looked into getting a replacement to fill in, “the nature of our music means that this is very difficult to arrange at a few days’ notice, and we would be unable to procure the necessary work permits in time.”They continued, “We were massively looking forward to playing in these new cities and meeting our fans who have been so supportive, and this outcome is very disappointing to us all.

Squid have released their tense new single ‘Fugue (Bin Song)’ – listen below.An outtake from their second LP ‘O Monolith’, ‘Fugue’ dives into drummer/vocalist Ollie Judge’s interest in animism by imagining a bin coming to life: “Animism, I’m in your grip / You help me make sense of all this / I see the surface every day / Animated alive through yellow spray.”On their social media, Squid wrote: “Bin Song is now out of the bin! Some of you might remember this song that was called Fugue from our live set over the last few years, was a pretty permanent fixture for a long while!“This track never made it onto O Monolith but is taken from a session with Dan Carey at Real World in Spring 2022 + thanks to John McEntire for adding some magic.”NME reviewed ‘O Monolith’ back in June, where we said in a four-star review: “If Squid can make daring, experimental music sound as fun as this, then they will take some stopping.”Squid are due to depart on a US tour with Water From Your Eyes as support acts.

Squid have teamed up with Tim Key to record the audio of Paul Ewen’s story Lessons, which is available to listen to now.The story was first featured on a pamphlet inside vinyl copies of the band’s new album ‘O Monolith’, which came out last month, while Squid guitarist Anton Pearson has written accompanying music for the audio read by UK poet, screenwriter and comedian Key, which is free to listen to on Bandcamp and YouTube.“We’ve loved working with these two people we really admire,” Pearson said of the release in a press statement.You can listen to the new audio recording below.Elaborating on the collaboration, Pearson said: “John Fahey’s story insert to his 1967 album ‘The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death’, inspired the project, and after reading and listening to Paul Ewen’s amazing work (London Pub Reviews, How to be a Public Author) and talking to him, we found he had a great understanding of our work and exciting ideas for the project.“He said he wanted to write a story about an out of touch geography teacher and it doesn’t get much more exciting than THAT! Squid have announced a 2024 North American tour and have shared ‘Undergrowth’, the second single from their forthcoming album ‘O Monolith’.Following on the launch single ‘Swing (In A Dream)‘, latest track ‘Undergrowth’ was inspired by an episode of Twin Peaks.“I really got into animism, the idea that spirits can live in inanimate objects,” shared drummer and singer Oille Judge. “I was watching Twin Peaks, and there was the episode where Josie Packard’s spirit goes into a chest of drawers.”He continued: “So ‘Undergrowth’ was written from the perspective of me being reincarnated as a bedside table in the afterlife, and how the thought of being reincarnated as an inanimate object would be dreadful.

Squid have spoken to NME about recently-announced new album ‘O Monolith‘ – which drummer and lead singer Ollie Judge described as “quite proggy, for better or worse”.‘O Monolith’, scheduled for release June 9 via WARP Records, follows acclaimed 2021 debut album ‘Bright Green Field’ – declared “a dazzling debut of wild experimentation” in a five-star NME review.Earlier this month, the band gave listeners a first taster of the album with lead single ‘Swing (In A Dream)’.“We started writing it the Monday after Green Man 2021” Judge said of the track. “We were really hungover, and I don’t think I could be bothered to play the drums properly, so that’s where that really simple drumbeat came from.”Squid have cited the lyrical inspiration for the single as Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s painting The Swing.

Squid have announced details of a new socially distanced UK tour, which will see them play work-in-progress new music.It comes as the Bristol-based band prepare to release their debut album ‘Bright Green Field’ via Warp next month.The new ‘Fieldworks’ tour will take place after the release of the album but prior to the full autumn tour, and see them play two shows back-to-back in a number of the cities on the run.Discussing the idea behind the tour, the band said: “With all this time rooted in one place we’ve been hard at work writing new music together.

Squid will take part in a special vinyl recording challenge next week to help launch Record Store Day 2021.This year’s annual celebration of vinyl and record stores will take place in the UK over two dates, June 12 and July 17.Squid will complete their live-to-vinyl recording challenge on April 7 at Metropolis Studios in London, where they will record two new songs onto a two-track EP live and direct to vinyl – with the band needing to get the recording right first time.Metropolis have recreated the original set-up of recording live-to-vinyl for the band to make use of on the day, with the end product set to be released on 12” vinyl on July 17 for the second part of Record Store Day 2021.Steve Lamacq will broadcast his BBC Radio 6 Music
