Manchester United have been ruthlessly mocked for crashing out of the Champions League last-16 to the “Spanish Burnley”. The Red Devils suffered a gruelling 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to lose the tie 2-1 on aggregate.
Ralf Rangnick ’s side were unable to find a way past the famous Atletico defence and Renan Lodi’s 41st minute header proved to be the decider in the end.
Opposition fans have since taken to social media to mock United for their early exit from the Champions League knock-out stages, referring to Atletico as the “Spanish Burnley” in a dig at both sides.The hilarious nickname comes from the notable similarities between Sean Dyche's Premier League side Burnley and Atletico Madrid in their defensive approach to the game.
Diego Simeone’s side are known for sitting deep and being incredibly difficult to break down. That was the case as United’s forward line, which included Cristiano Ronaldo, failed to score on Tuesday.
