South Shields are threatening legal action after their table-topping Betvictor Northern Premier League campaign was voided. They have invested heavily in a bid to climb out of the seventh tier, into the National League North.

Shields led FC United of Manchester by 12 points and were almost guaranteed promotion. But the FA have scrapped the season and results will be “expunged”.

That has caused fury at a club who have lured fans away from Sunderland and the Stadium of Light with their success under joint-managers Graham Fenton and Lee Picton.

Chairman Geoff Thompson said the club had been "badly let down". And he insisted they would be “writing to the FA in the strongest possible terms seeking an appeal...
