Charles Ingram
Charles William Ingram (born 6 August 1963) is an English novelist, computer repairman, and former British Army major who became known for being accused and convicted of cheating on the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001, after winning the maximum prize of one million pounds. Following a lengthy trial at Southwark Crown Court, he was convicted on a single count of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception. He was convicted of an unrelated insurance fraud in 2003, and ordered to resign his commission as a major by the Army Board.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? has been full of drama – usually provided by heartbreaking losses and tense wins – since it started back in 1998.

But in 2001 there was a huge scandal that spilled outside of the ITV show, when Major Charles Ingram and his wife Diana Ingram tried to cheat their way to the top prize of £1million.

The couple, alongside audience member and accomplice Tecwen Whittock, were accused of trying to rip off the show, by coughing at the correct answer.

The trio stood trial at Southwark Crown Court for the conspiracy, though all three pleaded not guilty to procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception.
