Charles Ingram
Charles William Ingram (born 6 August 1963) is an English novelist, computer repairman, and former British Army major who became known for being accused and convicted of cheating on the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001, after winning the maximum prize of one million pounds. Following a lengthy trial at Southwark Crown Court, he was convicted on a single count of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception. He was convicted of an unrelated insurance fraud in 2003, and ordered to resign his commission as a major by the Army Board.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire contestant Michael McPartland has laughed off claims he is a TV cheat. On Monday night viewers saw the 41-year-old tax office boss win £64,000 on the ITV quiz.

But they were stunned to discover he had made his own Fastest Finger First machine to practise on and help him stand a better chance of getting in the hot seat and facing Jeremy Clarkson.

This is exactly what “The Coughing Major” Charles Ingram did before he went on the show in 2001 and then cheated his way to the £1million jackpot.

Michael from Middlesbrough said: “People might say I cheated but it doesn’t come across as cheating. I was only practising. It’s no different to revising subjects for Mastermind.“ Michael practised for 30 minutes every day
