Queen has been granted planning permission to fix the leaky roof at Buckingham Palace. The London palace’s flat roofed sections have been a problem dating as far back as the 1830s, with staff reportedly having to catch rainwater in buckets during particularly strong downpours.There have even been concerns that the priceless royal art collection could be damaged by rainwater.Conservationists will now strip and replace the original 19th century roof and will rebuild structurally defective chimney stacks.The north range of the palace dates from the second major development phase of the central London site, which involved the remodelling of the then-called Buckingham House between 1820 and 1837.Work was originally started by architect John Nash.
