North Lanarkshire bin monitoring project to be extended

Electronic tags are to be added to thousands more bins in North Lanarkshire as a trial project to monitor recycling rates moves into its second phase.The “smart waste” monitoring initiative, initially piloted at 700 homes in Cumbernauld, is being scaled up this month to 4200 households on 127 streets in the town and neighbouring Moodiesburn and Mollinsburn.

It involves tags being fitted to the lids of the various bins at each house to record the weight of of mixed recycling, food and garden waste, paper and residual waste being collected.

Funded by Zero Waste Scotland, the trial is the first of its kind in the country and aims to contribute towards North Lanarkshire’s goal of nearly doubling recycling rates to 70 per cent compared to the area’s 2019 total of just over 40 per cent.
