shark known as the megamouth has baffled scientists with its unique trick to catch prey. The 16ft long beast which tips the scales at over a tonne, swims in such dark depths of the ocean that no one knew it existed until 1976 when a megamouth became entangled in an anchor near Hawaii.
Only a few dozen have been spotted since which has left fascinated marine biologists with a tough task of explaining the megamouth's 'glowing' band above its upper lip.
As filter feeders, the shark gets its name from swimming with its massive mouth wide open to catch and filter out plankton. What makes the megamouth such an effective predator in complete darkness is its luminous appearance inside its mouth — the cause of it is debated.
