Moves to increase the minimum wage of council workers to £10 per hour could potentially cost South Lanarkshire Council up to £8.3 million.A report discussed by the council’s executive committee on Wednesday, February 26, outlined the potential costs of increasing the wage of the lowest earners but recommended waiting until guidance from the Living Wage Consolidation Group was received.To implement the change, the council may have to “reopen” its pay model to reflect the guidance.A £10 per hour minimum wage – raising the earnings of the council’s lowest valued workers by around £800 a year – would cost at least £1.9 million but changes to the pay model at grade one would “ remove the progression which is available to higher grades”.South
