Millions of Londoners could be hit with Tier 3 coronavirus curbs next week – but Manchester could be moved down to the second alert level.

The capital's mayor Sadiq Khan feared the city's nine-million population was on the brink of being lifted into the top category – meaning pubs, restaurants and bars would close.

The infection rate per 100,000 people is one of five criteria used to decide in which level an area is placed. London's rate is 183.6, with some eastern boroughs' levels sky high, according to latest data.

Barking and Dagenham's is 298.7, Waltham Forest's is 298.82 and Newham's 255.7. Current restrictions will be reviewed next Wednesday.
