Director Tony Goldwyn on Making Road Trip Dramedy ‘Ezra’ After a Decades-Long Friendship

Tony Goldwyn Director Tony Goldwyn writes about the experience of working with his longtime friend, writer Tony Spiridakis, on the movie “Ezra,” which screened at TIFF and won the Audience Award at the Woodstock Film Festival. Bobby Cannavale stars as the father of an 11-year-old autistic son who sets off on a road trip with his son, without the permission of his son’s mother or his father, played by Robert De Niro, whose car he has “borrowed.” The friendship began before I could shut the door of my blue ’77 Chevy Nova. I had made the two and a half hour drive from college in Boston through the heart of the Berkshire mountains to Williamstown, Mass.

‘Rare Objects’ Review: Katie Holmes Directs and Costars in a Movie About Mental Illness, Antiques, and Recovering from Trauma
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Benita (Julia Mayorga), the young woman at the center of “Rare Objects,” the third feature directed by Katie Holmes, has been through a transformative trauma. In the film’s opening moments, she’s discharged from a mental ward, where she’s been dealing with PTSD; a series of charged flashbacks show us what happened to her. In Manhattan, where she was a university student majoring in economics, she was approached at a bar by a seemingly nice guy, who had a drink with her, and when she went to the restroom he attacked her, shoving her inside and sexually assaulting her. She emerges from this crime a shell of her former self, and Holmes shoots the rape so that we experience how the shock and horror of it could undermine someone’s identity. Benita, out of the hospital, shows up at the home of her doting but quietly stern mother (Saundra Santiago) in Astoria, telling her that she’s taking a break from school; she says nothing at all about what happened to her. She’ll continue to say nothing — to anyone. As she steps back out into the world, hunting for a job, Julia Mayorga acts with a tentative fretful wariness that speaks to the trauma Benita won’t say out loud, and we assume that the movie is going to be about how she confronts that crisis.

Emmys 2022: Inside the Parties
Marc Malkin Senior Film Awards, Events & Lifestyle Editor UTA Emmys Party, Sept. 9 This year’s Emmy host, Kenan Thompson, led UTA’s pre-Emmy bash on Friday night at the Rooftop at Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills. Intermittent rain made it a bit of a wet affair — and the evening humidity was not kind to attendees wearing suit jackets. But the rooftop afforded magnificent views (and the occasional lightning in the sky) for guests as they enjoyed lobster sliders, spicy tuna on crispy rice and churros with dipping sauce. Spotted on the roof were UTA founding partner Peter Benedek, HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier, producer Mark Johnson, Showtime entertainment president Jana Winograde. Among stars in the house: Emmy-nominated “Insecure” exec producer and star Issa Rae; Emmy nominee Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”); “Better Call Saul” stars Michael Mando and the Emmy-nominated Rhea Seehorn; “Succession” Emmy nominee Sarah Snook; “The Afterparty” star Sam Richardson, who was Emmy nominated as a guest star on “Ted Lasso”; comedian Patton Oswalt; “The Neighborhood” star Max Greenfield; and Emmy-nominated “Hacks” exec producer/writer Jen Statsky, along with the show’s breakout Meg Stalter.—Michael Schneider

Inside the secret abandoned tunnels hidden under New York 'forgotten for years'
urban explorers to visit that seem to be hidden in the middle of nowhere and far out of reach - some are right under our noses, literally.New York City has been around for centuries - always moving, always changing and naturally, some parts get forgotten about and left behind. Some may be obvious, as the skyline adapts, buildings are often scrapped and closed down but some areas of the city were never meant to be seen by the public and have been kept hidden below the city’s streets.According to Abandoned Spaces, there are many tunnel systems that once played a vital role in the city but have never been in the public eye.Take the McCarren Park Pool Tunnels for example - it is under one of the most frequented leisure centres of the city, with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and other sporting activities. However, the pool features underwater lighting, as well as filtration and heating systems, all of which require a behind-the-scenes infrastructure - which is why there are secret tunnels going underneath it for easier maintenance. There is also the Track 61 Grand Central Terminal which is hidden beneath the Waldorf Astoria New York Hotel. It once had a long history of being part of the city's train system for years but it was closed and due to be converted for more modern trains in the 70s.But the work was not completed and the tracks have seen very little use since - other than when it was allegedly used as an escape route for President George W.
