The University Challenge host released a statement saying he is experiencing "mild symptoms" of the illness and has been receiving "excellent treatment".
He added that he plans to continue broadcasting and has written about his diagnosis for next month's issue of Saga magazine.
The 71-year-old broadcaster, who was born in Leeds, started his career in 1972 on the BBC’s graduate trainee programme, working in local radio and reporting on the Troubles in Belfast.
